Users received a strange notification, they were hacked by Google

Thousands of users have received unexpected emails from Google Pay saying they’ve successfully “added a new card” to their Google Account.

The notification sent many people into a panic and took to social media to voice their concerns. They feared they had become victims of fraud. Google reassured users that there was no account hacking or data leakage.

Wednesday and Thursday last week more Google Pay users got it the email below that a new card has been added to your Google Pay account. For more a card was added to the account that has been expired for years.

Concerned users took to social media and Google’s support forums for help about notifications and whether you have been a victim of fraud. Some reported receiving multiple emails.

Some people found about 15 notifications in their inbox. Another user claimed to have received three notifications for each previously expired card connected to Google Pay. No wonder people were afraid of a hacker attack.

Generally, users trust a digital wallet provider. They trust that they properly control access and take great care to secure transactions. Especially when Google is one of the biggest companies in the world.

According to Google, it was “accidental”, no break-in

The mystery was quickly solved, at least as far as it could be Google’s social media team was quick to respond to those posts. They explained that the email notifications they received were “in error”.

A follow-up email was sent to affected users on Saturday, stating that the previous email notification was “accidental” and there was no cause for concern:
