The Netherlands will reintroduce internal border controls from December 9 to better deal with illegal immigration, with the measure being implemented for six months. The measure, proposed by Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party (PVV) Minister for Refugees and Immigration Marjolein Faber, has been approved by the Council of Ministers.
The Dutch government aims to reduce irregular migration in the country and expel those who do not meet the conditions for entry or stay based on European regulations and agreements involving Belgium and Germany. The Royal Dutch Military Police (Marechaussee) will carry out the inspections and will ensure minimal disruption to economic and commuter traffic.
This move mirrors similar decisions by Germany, Austria, France, and Denmark who have all introduced or extended temporary border controls due to rising migration waves and security concerns.
