Russian Investigator Sentenced to 16 Years in Prison for Accepting 1,032 BTC Bribe from Hacker

According to BlockBeats news, on October 9, Russia sentenced a former chief investigator, Marat Tambiyev, to 16 years in prison after he was found to have accepted a 1,032 BTC bribe from a group of hackers, now worth $65 million. Last year, Tambiyev was accused of accepting BTC bribes from people associated with the “Infraud Organization” a hacker group that is being investigated by Russia’s Investigative Committee. As part of the agreement, Tambiyev agreed not to confiscate the Bitcoins illegally obtained by the group. Subsequently, he received half of the illegal assets on April 7, 2022.

In 2023, Russian authorities discovered these BTC under a file called “Pension” on a Mac computer. Authorities reasoned that the money was unreasonable given that his job would only earn him 11.7 million rubles ($144,000).

Tambiyev reportedly denies the accusations and claims he was framed. He plans to appeal the verdict along with his colleague Kristina Lyakhovenko, who was jailed for nine years on the same charges in the same case. (Protos)
