IOSCO urges increased crypto investor education.

On October 10, Cointelegraph reported that the Board of Directors of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) highlighted the significant increase in retail investors’ ownership of cryptocurrencies since 2020. In response, IOSCO called for greater investor education in the field.

According to an IOSCO report released on October 9, 15 out of 24 jurisdictions surveyed reported that retail investor cryptocurrency ownership was 10% or more in the previous year. In contrast, six jurisdictions reported ownership of 30% or more. This marks a significant increase from 2020, when half of the jurisdictions surveyed estimated that only 1% to 5% or fewer investors owned cryptocurrencies.

IOSCO noted that the crypto-asset sector has continued to grow since 2020, despite market volatility, especially during the “crypto winter” in 2022. Retail investors have continued to invest in crypto in both advanced economies and emerging market jurisdictions.
