Oxfam’s recent report, *Carbon Inequality Kills*, reveals that the world’s 50 richest billionaires emit more CO2 in 90 minutes than an average person does in their entire life. The report highlights the urgent problems of climate change and how unjust emission structures feed global inequalities. The report reveals that the average of these 50 richest billionaires made 184 private plane trips in just one year, emitting as much CO2 as an average person would in 300 years.
Their luxury yachts emit as much CO2 in one year as an average person would in 860 years. However, their investments in polluting industries are even more harmful, with emissions 340 times greater than the emissions from their luxury vehicles. Oxfam director Amitabh Behar said, “The super-rich treat the planet as their own playground, which they burn for fun and profit.
Their luxury devices and polluting investments are not only exaggerations, but direct threats to people and the planet.”
Climate injustice hits the world’s poorest countries the hardest. Oxfam estimates that carbon dioxide emissions reduce the global economy’s performance, especially in developing countries, which could lose 2.5% of their GDP by 2050.
The decline in food production is also a critical issue.
