On December 9, BlockBeats reported that the National Center for Public Policy Research in Washington, D.C. (a think tank supporting free markets) has submitted a shareholder proposal to Amazon. The proposal suggests that at the April 2025 shareholder meeting, Amazon should consider adopting Bitcoin as a corporate treasury strategy.
The National Center for Public Policy Research argued in the proposal that the current US consumer price index (CPI), measuring inflation, is 4.95%, but this indicator is “poor” at measuring actual currency depreciation. The real inflation rate may be double the CPI report number, which would significantly erode Amazon’s $88 billion in cash and short-term cash equivalents.
To protect shareholder value, Bitcoin should be used to hedge this risk. The proposal noted that as of December 6, 2024, the price of Bitcoin had increased by 131% year-on-year, outperforming corporate bonds by an average of 126%. Over the past five years, the price of Bitcoin had increased by 1,246%, outperforming corporate bonds on average by 1,242%.
