On November 16, the US Federal Court of Appeal approved Special Prosecutor Smith’s request to suspend the appeal of the “Trump-related confidential documents case.” Smith is closing two cases against Trump based on the Justice Department’s longstanding ban on prosecuti
ng sitting presidents. With Trump winning the 2024 US presidential election and set to become president in January 2025, Smith says that suspending appeals now will allow the government time to assess this unique situation in line with the Justice Department’s policy.
