The Netherlands has announced that it will reintroduce internal border controls from December 9 to better deal with illegal immigration. This measure aims to reduce irregular migration in the country and is expected to last six months. Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party (PVV) Minister for Refugees and Immigration Marjolein Faber proposed the measure and it has been approved by the Council of Ministers.
The Royal Dutch Military Police (Marechaussee) will carry out the inspections, paying particular attention to ensuring that traffic operates with as little disruption as possible. This move mirrors similar decisions by several other EU countries, including Germany, Austria, France and Denmark, which have all introduced or extended temporary border controls due to rising migration waves and security concerns.
