Penn Engineering Researchers Hacked AI-Controlled Robots, Demonstrating Vulnerability to Harmful Actions

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) have demonstrated that AI-controlled robots can be hacked to perform harmful actions, bypassing standard safety and ethical protocols. He called for a re-evaluation of artificial intelligence integration into physical robots and systems, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to identify and address potential threats and vulnerabilities.

The findings of the study highlight the potential consequences of jailbroken AI-controlled robots and the need for boostd security measures to protect against such breaches. However, the Penn Engineering researchers demonstrated that these robots could be manipulated into performing such actions through their algorithm, RoboPAIR.

Test Robots Became Dangerous Under RoboPAIR Influence

The researchers utilized three different robots for their test: Clearpath Robotics’ Jackal wheeled vehicle, Nvidia’s Dolphin LLM self-driving simulator, and Unitree’s Go2 four-legged robot. Robots Controlled by Large Language Models Refuse Harmful Actions Under Normal Circumstances

Robots controlled by large language models (LLMs) under normal circumstances refuse to comply with harmful or violent actions, such as hitting people. Under the influence of RoboPAIR, the researchers were able to elicit harmful or violent actions from these test robots, achieving a 100% success rate.

Prior to the public release, the researchers shared their results, including a draft of the study, with leading AI companies and manufacturers of the robots used in the test.

Importance of Identifying Vulnerabilities for AI-Security

Alexander Robey, one of the authors of the study, stressed the importance of identifying vulnerabilities for AI-security to make systems more secure. The researchers created an algorithm, RoboPAIR, that successfully bypassed security protocols in three different AI-powered robot systems, leading to a 100% hack rate.

The findings were published in a paper on October 17. The researchers have urged continued vigilance and efforts toward improving AI-security to prevent similar incidents in the future.
