UN Adopts Controversial Resolutions on Hate Speech, Fake News and Digital IDs

The United Nations (UN) has recently taken new steps to fight hate speech and fake news, causing controversy in the international community. Two new resolutions have been adopted by the UN Fourth Committee, which aim to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Global Digital Pact, and the Pact of the Future.

The initiative supports the introduction of digital IDs, as well as censorship and increased surveillance, which are supported by many influential countries. The UN wants to create a global system that manages citizens’ data in a uniform manner and fights misinformation more effectively. Represents from many countries support expanded censorship under the auspices of the United Nations.

The European Union also supports the new direction, placing special emphasis on the fight against Russian disinformation. However, Argentina, for example, expressed concern that the term “hate speech” could be easily misinterpreted and used as a tool to suppress the free expression of opinion. As a result, the Argentine representative withdrew his support for the parts of the document dealing with hate speech and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
