Nigerian Court Adjourns Trial of Jailed Binance Executive Due to Illness
A Nigerian court has adjourned the trial of Tigran Gambaryan, a jailed executive from cryptocurrency exchange Binance. The court postponed the trial due to Gambaryan’s illness, which prevented him from attending a scheduled court appearance. Gambaryan, a U.S. citizen and former federal agent, missed the hearing and was unable to present his case in person. As a result, Nigerian High Court Judge Emeka Nwite rescheduled the trial to allow the Binance employee time for medical treatment.
Gambaryan’s Health Problems: A Brief Overview
Tigran Gambaryan’s health issues have been well-documented in recent months. In February 2021, he was arrested by Nigerian authorities on charges of operating an unregistered virtual currency exchange platform within Nigeria’s borders. The arrest came as part of an ongoing crackdown on cryptocurrency exchanges operating in Nigeria without proper licensing or authorization from relevant regulatory bodies such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Following his arrest, Gambaryan reportedly fell ill while being held at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison awaiting trial proceedings against him for allegedly violating Section 6(1)(b) & (c) of the Central Bank Decree No 24 which prohibits individuals from operating virtual currency exchanges without prior approval from CBN officials among other offenses under this decree including money laundering activities through these platforms amongst others..
