Guyana’s government has announced a $100,000 GYD (equivalent to HUF 171,000) grant for every citizen over the age of 18, as part of the country’s plan to share its oil wealth. The grant, funded by revenue from Guyana’s oil industry, is available to anyone with a valid passport or identity card, including Guyanese living abroad.
The government initially planned to give each household $200,000 GYD, but revised the plan to include young people who are not yet heads of households. The grant aims to provide income support for many families and indigenous villages, as well as help with essential projects and household needs. Despite concerns regarding potential inflation, the government believes the grant will benefit the country’s economy, which has experienced significant growth since the discovery of oil in 2015.
