This proposal aims to reduce Ethereum’s block time by 33% and increase data capacity, which could lead to a 50% increase in overall throughput.

The EIP, numbered 7781, was introduced on October 5 by Ben Adams, co-founder of Illyriad Games. The goal of this proposal is to shorten block times on the Ethereum network from 12 seconds to 8 seconds, improve rollup-based latency, and increase blob capacity (a temporary data structure used to reduce layer 2 network overhead).

In an article written on October 6, an anonymous developer known as Cygaar mentioned that EIP-7781 could be a crucial step in enhancing the base layer of Ethereum, especially at a time when most developers are focused on Ethereum L2 as a scaling solution.

Aside from boosting mainnet throughput, the proposal also aims to spread out bandwidth usage over time, ultimately lowering peak bandwidth requirements without adding more individual blocks or blobs. Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake has expressed support for the EIP on GitHub, noting that the current proposals align with the broader goals set by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and the Ethereum Scaling Organization.
