Early Ethereum consultant sues law firm for improper defense in extortion case, seeking $100 million

According to BlockBeats, on September 9, according to Cointelegraph, Steven Nerayoff, an early Ethereum consultant, filed a lawsuit in the New York State Supreme Court on September 6, demanding $100 million in compensation from Covington & Burling Law Firm. Nerayoff accused the firm of making mistakes in its defense of the extortion case filed against it by the United States in 2019.

Steven Nerayoff claimed that the law firm advised him not to submit key evidence to prosecutors that could prove the legality of his actions, including negotiation videos and emails with the alleged victims. In June 2022, Nerayoff submitted these evidence to prosecutors on his own, and the case was dropped in May 2023. A Covington spokesperson denied the allegations, calling the lawsuit “baseless” and saying it would “firmly” fight the lawsuit. Nerayoff’s lawyers said that because the lawsuit prevented him from doing business and lost contracts in the encryption field, he was seeking at least $100 million in compensation.
