On November 13, 2024, the Defense Procurement Agency (VBÜ) in Hungary was targeted in a cyber attack, with hackers demanding $5 million from the government. Sensitive data, such as military procurement lists and documents discussing Hungary’s defense capabilities, were exposed. The ransomware attack not only affected Hungary but also targeted other countries and companies.
The purpose of the attack is unclear, but both authorities and private cyber defense companies are working on the case. The Hungarian cyber security company RavenForTech discovered that the malicious program was put on the market for $300,000 in the spring of 2024, suggesting the possibility of a third party being involved in the attack.
