Justin Sun, founder of Tron, has purchased Maurizio Cattelan’s “Comedian,” a banana duct-taped to a wall, for a jaw-dropping $6.2 million at Sotheby’s New York. Sun plans to eat the banana and has declared that it represents a cultural phenomenon bridging art, memes, and cryptocurrency. The auction began at $800,000 and quickly escalated to a $5.2 million bid, plus $1 million in Sotheby’s fees.
Sun’s investment includes a 35-cent banana, a roll of duct tape, and an instruction manual on replacing the banana when it goes mushy, as well as a certificate of authenticity.
