In Russia, the Ministry of Energy has announced plans to ban cryptomining in some regions and intensify action against illegal miners in Siberia. The deputy energy minister, Yevgeny Grabchak, said state-level bans would likely last until 2030 due to lack of electricity in these areas. The law empowers regions to impose temporary bans on miners, but the ministry’s new proposal gives the central government the right to issue local mining bans.
This comes after President Vladimir Putin gave his blessing to cryptomining earlier this year, while also requesting regions have the right to force miners to turn off machines due to power shortages. Meanwhile, Irkutsk law enforcement and power providers are cracking down on illegal crypto miners operating in the region.
