The Digital Chamber of Commerce has asked the US Office of Government Ethics to reconsider its ban on federal employees holding cryptocurrency. In a letter, the group proposed that the Ethics Office allow a small, limited amount of digital assets to be owned by government workers. Currently, federal employees are not allowed to hold any crypto, as it’s thought it could lead to conflicts of interest.
The Digital Chamber argued that a small allowance would not create conflicts and would provide a consistent framework for managing possible issues. They also suggested that a similar exemption for minor crypto holdings would ensure fairness across asset classes. The group believes that a more balanced approach to digital asset ownership would help federal employees understand the technologies they regulate, creating a more effective regulatory framework.
Their call for policy reform aligns with the Chamber’s broader advocacy for clearer regulation around stablecoins, which they believe is important for global savings and cross-border payments.
