A phishing scammer impersonating Coinbase support called Nick Neuman, CEO of Bitcoin storage solutions provider Casa, in an attempt to steal from high-value cryptocurrency holders. During the call, the swindler described their criminal operation, targeting individuals with crypto holdings worth at least $50,000, and explained how the scheme works.
The scammers employ sophisticated and fear-driven methods to deceive potential victims, such as password change request cancellation, spoofed emails, and leaked data from platforms like Unchained Capital. These tools allow them to target individuals precisely and convince them to send funds directly to wallets under their control.
The scammers use privacy-focused tools like Tornado Cash and Monero to cover their tracks. Neuman’s interaction with the scammer sheds light on their motivation, with the swindler boasting about being only a few thousand dollars shy of a $100,000 target within 30 days. The scam highlights the importance of crypto holders being extremely vigilant in their interactions, as phishing ploys exploit trust and fear to deceive even seasoned professionals.
