Bitcoin has risen by 25% since Trump’s US election win last week. The spread between Bitcoin futures and spot prices reached its highest level since March, with hedge funds profiting from this “basis trading”. The basis of CME Group is currently close to 18%, and the basis of the recent contract of Bitcoin futures listed on the exchange exceeds that of other derivatives platforms.
Institutions may now seek to take advantage of the spread between futures and spot prices for arbitrage purposes.
