Phantom Wallet Downtime During GRASS Token Airdrop

On October 28th, wallet provider Phantom experienced nearly three hours of downtime due to a major incident with their wallet’s backend, causing users on X to report missing balances and inability to perform transactions. This was the second time Phantom services had gone down this month, with an 8-minute shutdown reported on October 3rd.

Following the incident, Phantom’s team stated they would “continue to actively monitor the situation” and take necessary steps to prevent similar issues. Additionally, Phantom reported 12 major backend incidents in 2024, with seven happening on February 1st, totaling almost one and a half hours of downtime.

While Phantom’s issues were occurring, the Solana network remained fully operational. Phantom’s downtime coincided with the launch of the claim of GRASS tokens, leading observers to tie both events together. The GRASS tokens are native to the Solana-based decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN) network Grass and are used to reward users that lend unused internet bandwidth.
