GitHub faced a major performance issue in October 2024 that affected its DNS infrastructure, which in turn impacted services like Copilot and Actions workflows. The problem began due to a failed DNS infrastructure after a database migration at one of the company’s sites. This led to degraded performance across several services, with 4% of Copilot users experiencing degraded IDE code completions and 25% of Actions workflow users encountering delays exceeding five minutes.
The issue was resolved after GitHub’s team implemented a remediation plan, deploying temporary DNS resolution capabilities to the affected site. The company has since committed to strengthening its resiliency and automation processes to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
