Univ. of Washington’s New Deep Learning Model Boosts Weather and Climate Forecasting Accuracy

At the University of Washington, a professor named Dale Durran has created a new deep learning model that helps make weather and climate predictions more accurate. This model combines information about the atmosphere and the ocean, and it was shown at a big technology event called NVIDIA GTC 2024. The model uses a special grid called a HEALPix grid, which makes Earth look like a sphere in the model instead of being flat.

This helps make the predictions more accurate. The model also uses powerful computers, called NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs, to make the predictions quickly. This new model can help people understand the weather and climate better, which is important as we face challenges from climate change.
